About this deal

You can bring a Trunki case as hand luggage, as long as it weighs no more than 10kg. In addition to the piece of hand luggage you can also bring one small personal item, things like laptops, handbags or a briefcase. The airline says this must be small enough to be stored under the seat.

Which? says that this year, with strikes and staff shortages, “it pays to pay attention to those airlines that look after customers when something goes wrong”. One 7kg carry-on bag per passenger, maximum size 48 x 33 x 20 cm plus one small personal item per passenger (small handbag, laptop bag, baby changing bag), maximum size 25 x 33 x 20 cm. Dimensions are 55 x 35 x 20cm so perfect again if you have priority seating with extra carry on luggage/ extra legroom /Upfront seats with easyJet. Rory Boland says airlines with a more generous free baggage allowance may be cheaper than Ryanair and easyJet ‘once you have added on the cost of a bag or two’. Photograph: N Carson/PA Legroom Jet2 lets you carry on board one piece of hand luggage for free, as long as it weighs no more than 10kg and is a maximum of 56cm x 45cm x 25cm.

As it's getting closer to summer, some of us may be planning to jet off on a summer holiday or a city break. For years, I struggled to find a carry-on suitcase that was perfect for me. There were some that came close, but there were always features I wished they’d had, or design flaws that seemed obvious to me. So…I designed my very own cabin case, with a luggage company called Cabin Max! Is it worth paying extra for the extras? “It depends on the airline and the destination,” Charles says. “If you’re on a four-hour flight to Athens, it’s worth paying extra for more legroom. If you’re only on a 90-minute flight, or have a small bag, then just pay the basic fare.”

With some airlines each having different hand luggage rules, you might want to know how what allowance you have for your trip. This bag looks really sleek and professional, but also has a bit more structure than the classic holdall. Plus, it’s made by reputable luggage brand Tripp, which means it comes with that all-important five year guarantee. Which? quizzed more than 8,000 travellers about their experiences of flying in the past two years. Photograph: Sascha Steinbach/EPA What do travel experts say? In terms of Ryanair, Which? advises people to “do your maths first before booking to see if better rivals, like Jet2, which includes a much larger free luggage allowance, are cheaper for your trip”. Fly Flex + passengers can carry 1 bag up to 6kg free of charge plus a small handbag and slimline laptop bag. Wizz Air is one of the least generous on this front, with a seat pitch of 28in (71.12cm), although to be fair, at Jet2, the range is between 28in and 31in, so you may not fare much better on one of its flights. Some may be surprised to learn that, at 30in, Ryanair is very slightly more generous than easyJet (29in). Flying BA will often give you more legroom: its seat pitch figure is 29in to 34in. At Tui Airways, it is 28in to 34in.

Budget airlines in the UK also make things even more complicated because many of them allow a small ‘free’ bag which must fit under the seat in front of you. And then you have to pay an additional fee for your carry-on suitcase. So there are two pieces of carry-on luggage to think about! All liquids should be carried in a single, transparent, re-sealable plastic bag of up to 20cm x 20cm with a total capacity of up to a litre Passengers can bring on board one piece of hand luggage free of charge, although it must not exceed 10kg and should be no larger than 56cm x 45cm x 25cm, including any wheels and handles. Drones/Quadcopters are powered by lithium batteries. Lithium battery operated devices are accepted for carriage in the cabin once the battery does not excess 160 watt hours. If the battery exceeds 160wh the device will not be accepted for carriage. This is the only carry-on luggage option I’ve included that’s slightly over the Ryanair carry-on dimensions (by 2cm). It complies with all of the other airlines I’ve mentioned though, and honestly, in my experience, if you can squish your bag into those measuring cages (which you can with a duffel), they don’t question it. Still. Be warned, it is 2cm over. Your baggage is your responsibility. Ryanair does not accept any liability for passenger’s hand baggage, as it is each individual passenger’s responsibility to ensure that they carry all of their belongings with them when leaving the airport or aircraft.

This is a big deal for a lot of people. The Which? survey includes details on each airline’s “seat pitch”: the distance between two rows in standard economy. Seats with more legroom are often available, although you will usually have to pay extra If you have booked an Up front or Extra legroom seat you can also bring an additional large cabin bag – 56 x 45 x 25 cm, standard dimension for carry on luggage. Vueling carry on size hand luggageThe maximum number of cabin bags available per person is two; one small cabin bag for all customers and one large cabin bag for customers where it’s included with their seat, fare or membership benefits or where they have paid to add one to their booking. If your hand luggage is too big, you’ll be turned away at the gate or charged extra to store it in the plane’s hold. Do you get free 10 kg hand luggage with Ryanair?
