Originally released via the legendary Factory Records, Substance compiled all of the band's singles to that point in their 12” versions with many of their respective B-sides (on the CD and cassette versions), and specially new recorded versions of "Temptation" and "Confusion. The album is the band’s biggest selling to date, with over one million copies sold, going platinum in the UK with a Top 5 hit in "True Faith" which was accompanied by the seminal video, directed by French choreographer Philippe Decouflé.

Records that aren't in picture sleeves will either be in a company sleeve or a generic plain sleeve. It's understandable given it pulled together all their singles up to 1987, but equally they re-recorded classics like 'Confusion' and 'Temptation' so everything fitted together more naturally. CD4 features an unreleased concert, Live from Irvine Meadows, California, 12th September 1987, where the band uniquely played the entire album in sequence. Fissinger’s musical approach is refreshingly uncomplicated, allowing the beauty of the song’s simplicity to shine through. But you won't find anywhere near this level of service from them, and I'll be sure to keep Holburn in mind for the future.There will also be 2LP and double cassette editions of this reissue with the former available as black or blue/red coloured vinyl. The lone exception is Substance, which features audio remastered in 2010 for the +- singles box and for the first time on vinyl, the expanded tracklist from the original CD release, plus two additional songs: “As You Said” and the Pennine version of “Love Will Tear Us Apart.

This track presents a lovely take on the well-known song, infusing it with a mellow jazz vibe that showcases Graulund’s musical talent. Collecting all singles up to that point, including ‘Blue Monday’, 'Temptation', 'Thieves Like Us', 'Bizarre Love Triangle', 'True Faith', and Joy Division cover ‘Ceremony’ and furnished with B-sides, re-recordings and club-ready remixes, Substance arguably became the Manchester group’s most influential and best-loved record. I don't have an original copy of this record to compare this reissue with, but to me it sounds fantastic and I would recommend it.
