As each weekly instalment arrives, and Davey continues to grow, the children experience the wonders of the world and the beauty of being alive. It was fantastic following the story of a boy lenny who's family is just falling apart and becomes some what neglected. Candy aspires to reassert his responsibility lost with the death of his dog, and for security for his old age—on George's homestead.
As with all Alanna Max's books, there is a sense of play and acute observation of the antics of young children here that I think can be missing in many stories for the young - something to relate to. The story takes place in a pristine forest populated only by wildlife, where envy, revenge, and betrayal continue to exist… In contrast to Lenny and Benny’s happy ending, the story of Kamtza and Bar Kamtza ends on a tragic note, with no peaceful resolution. Funnily enough, the ones that were offering the most money were the ones that didn't really talk about the content of the book at all. Regarding human interaction, the evil of oppression and abuse is a theme that is illustrated through Curley and Curley's wife. She is a clear-eyed narrator and through her we meet a varied cast of characters from the eccentric Mrs Gaspar to her classmate CJ.
