About this deal

Original edition was published in and this unique edition is Reprinted in 2008 with the help of original edition.

Among them are such favorites as "Number Thirteen," "Canon Alberic's Scrap-book," and "Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad. One picture, “The dispute of Solomon with a demon of the night”, proves to be particularly compelling…and why is the sacristan so eager to get rid of a book so obviously of great value? His first collection, GHOST-STORIES OF AN ANTIQUARY, is generally taken to mark the beginning of the modern era of supernatural fiction . Spine and board edges browned, ink splashes to foot of rear board, inner hinges starting, book block remaining firm, scattered foxing to contents, tide mark to fore edge of front free endpaper, a very good copy. Count Magnus' – The titular Count reminded me a bit of Vigo the Carpathian from Ghost Busters 2: he was a mean-spirited son of a bitch who liked to torture people in his spare time and go on fun little trips with names like “the Black Pilgrimage”. All of these obsessions and fears are in these tales - hairy things are particularly loathsome to him - Warner informed this came from him finding some skeletons once with hair still clinging to the skulls.

This volume was followed, in 1911, by More Ghost Stories of an Antiquary, containing a further seven stories on similar themes. Finance is provided by PayPal Credit (a trading name of PayPal UK Ltd, Whittaker House, Whittaker Avenue, Richmond-Upon-Thames, Surrey, United Kingdom, TW9 1EH). Among the eight extremely creepy stories in this volume is the frequently anthologized tale, "The Mezzotint" Bleiler, Supernatural Fiction, p. If you like traditional ghost stories that unnerve the reader subtly by suggestion and indirection, this is a book you should read.

The Ash-tree' – A nobleman and his descendants find that being the star witness in a witch trial probably isn’t a good idea. James' ghost stories were printed in general magazines in the 1890s and he was commissioned to publish this collection by Edward Arnold. He and his wife, Leah Moore, have been scripting comics together since 2003, writing for the likes of 2000 AD, Channel 4 Education, Dark Horse, DC Comics, Dynamite Entertainment, Electricomics, IDW, and Self Made Hero. She was also the contributing editor of Electricomics flagship release, co-writing the sci-fi story Sway, with art by Nicola Scott.

Bound in the original publishers' fawn linen cloth over boards, crimson fillets across boards with black titles to upper board and spine. Sustained by outstanding writing and closely nuanced characters each story pulls the reader along with suspense and mystery. Finely bound copy of the Dover edition, which kept the work of James available for American readers before the ghost story revival. We are often left at the end of these stories with the feeling that it’s not over, as in The Treasure of Abbot Thomas, where the greed for treasure drives Mr Somerton literally into the arms (or tentacles) of a supernatural creature.Typical foxing and two small stains to front cover, two owner's inscriptions to FFEP, front hinge just starting at head, otherwise a very sound and handsome copy. Having terrified generations since its first publication in 1904, Ghost Stories of an Antiquary is a collection that will haunt the reader’s imagination long after the lights have gone out. Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad'– Ah skeptics…they always learn their lesson in the end, don’t they?

The strength of these stories lies in the fact that James, rather than using unconvincing pedantry in the form of invented or archaic terminology, which he believed always failed to convince a reader, uses instead references based on genuine scholarship. When he has you thoroughly involved and at your most somnambulant, it is only then that the inexplicable suddenly rears its head, usually byway of a few powerful images that change the dream to nightmare. The Mezzotint' – I really liked the interesting way in which the artifact in question here, the mezzotint of the title, manifested the supernatural and the foreboding sense of a quiet yet unstoppable horror that was the result. Some of these tales are very creepy indeed; but they are perfect for spending those long Winter evenings with (with a glass of something warming perhaps.
