About this deal

Now you can get the lightest, most compact solution to keep your electronics charged anywhere, any time with the FlameStower.

The Vista fins comfortably lock each earbud into your ear, and weighing only 6 grams, you will probably forget they are there. From there, FlameStower uses the differential in temperature between the portion in the fire and the relatively cool water to generate electricity, which is then sent through a USB cable and to the user's phone, MP3 player, digital camera, or other device. Now I was Silicon Valley coder/engineer myself once so I realize none there has ever seen a rainy campsite. Once the blade is in a fire, the thermal energy is transferred to the Thermoelectric Generator (TEG). Learning and sharing information to aid in emergency preparedness as it relates to both natural and man-made disasters.

Today I’m going to introduce you to a product that uses two inherent elements to camping to generate power to charge and USB device you’ve got – the FlameStower. hot side gets hot, cold side stays relatively cool, and the temperature difference generates electricity. After a career managing the development of utility-scale wind and solar projects, I came to Stanford's materials science department in 2011 to study energy chemistry and physics and turn the science into practical, well-designed, personal energy products. The second one suffered the same distortion and damage to the housing, but remains operable up to this point. Honestly, the Vipukirves Leveraxe initially intrigued me because the guy holding it in one of the above photos is wearing black-and-white gloves that sort of make him look like he has a hook hand, and I thought perhaps. On a typical meal I can probably get anywhere between 5-10% charge on my Sony Xperia Z3 compact D5803. however its not very good for using to burn material for heat or recreation like a regular fire does, which is where this item would do better im thinking. The FlameStower consists of a folding metal stand, collapsible water reservoir, and protruding metal prong that slides into the flames of campfires, grills, or burners. The biolite stove is a much nicer and more useful piece of kit that lets you cook and charge phones efficiently, burning twigs for fuel.

The opposite surface of the TEG is in contact with the water reservoir – hot side gets hot, cold side stays relatively cool, and the temperature difference generates electricity. With the Flamestower you will be able to charge most small electronic devices with the majority of backpacking and camp stoves on the market, as well as with a small camp fire. After opening the unit to either stand or lay in flames – this can be in a campfire, fire pit or simply on a camp stove burner – you fill the collapsible silicon cup with water. This is an issue directly related to the iPhone when used with a fluctuating or unstable power source, and in essence makes charging the phone with such a device a effort in futility. If the water was simmering or boiling I would begin to see the voltage oscillate and become unsteady. It works by the temperature difference between the water put into the reservoir and the blade that goes into the flame. Take it from those of us who have camped or hiked in other parts of the US (and I imagine even more so outside the US), wet outdoors makes components impossible to keep dry or clean. This means that for phones, it should be able to create somewhere between two and four minutes of talk time for each minute on the charger. The TEG body consists of the flame tounge, the TEG housing, collapsible water cup/reservoir, and the voltage regulator and USB port. Its design allows for easy setup, charging, and storing, making FlameStower your affordable, go to device.

The only thing I found that helped substantially was to place chunks of ice into the water reservoir along with water. All of the sections are able to be adjusted for height and angle to accommodate working with many different sizes and shapes of backpacking stoves. The high-dose patches unlock the power of your body's NAD+ levels without the needles, trips to the clinic, and for a fraction of the cost. I like it but one of the items I wanted to charge needs more than 3 volts output (input to device) to charge. The Flamestower does not always charge this slow, but I could find no rhyme or reason to it; it seemed randomly it would come back closer to its nominal range of 5vDC at 2.

Very similar to the FlameStower, The Ajirangi The miniO is a small and lightweight portable personal generator for backpackers. As the prong heats, it transfers energy to a power generator, one side of which is submerged in the water bath to keep it cool. Perhaps with a product revamp or complete redesign the Flamestower would be a more viable option, but as it is now I would not be able to recommend this product to anyone. The Ajirangi Portable Thermoelectric Generator is the most similar product to the FlameStower now on the market.
