Because the novel is filled and washed with light, whether this is the light of the sun or the foggy light of winter, it means that whenever Petterson describes the colours of anything, they stand out. There is much that goes unsaid about the other actors in this drama, but as always with Petterson, even the most seemingly incidental characters are vividly painted, from the neighbour boy, Mogens, who takes Arvid boating and fishing, and with whom he experiences a frisson of sexual insecurity, to the anonymous, possibly paedophilic stranger he encounters on the ferry in the opening pages of the novel, a man at once sinister and pathetic.And reading it, knowing the bit that I do about Irish history, I feel like the events described could have really happened. Around him, however, the adults – haunted by the recent loss of a child and a terrible betrayal – are less confident. This tale just meandered along with some very cliched characters (Timmy, McClure and SB man Gifford) all hopelessly overdone.
