About this deal

A lot of questions still hang in the air and I am invested enough to wait for the next one to get my answers.

Unfortunately the book ended on a cliffhanger, as many books do, which was fine, but my main issue with it was how abruptly it ended. The highest-ranking general is a woman, by merit, not because she is a woman, and there are just as many women overseers and bosses as there are men. The last two thirds of the book are still packed with world building, but also some incredibly epic fight scenes. Demon's Reign is a slow burn, story driven narrative that hinges heavily on worldbuilding and character.Haidak’s father, Sage Baran is an advisor to the Matriarch and the nobleman responsible for the Terelta family’s fall from grace. He is someone so desperate to succeed, to not let those who put their faith in him down that he sometimes doesn’t make the best of decisions, but you can’t fault the heart behind them, knowing he is just trying to do what is right. I read every single word and caught myself bobbing and weaving my head as I dodged fireballs and mud arrows launched from the opposing sides. This book was so incredibly intricate with immense world building, both beautiful and horrifying scenes and a bunch of misfit characters I absolutely adored. The only comment that stands out to me is that it was a little clean and why isn’t there any blood on his axe?

The orange and blue on the armour of the shins and forearms to distinguish them is very bold rather than the dirty look of most of the others. There are 6 classes of demon but I only feel my minis tick the boxes for Armoured demons and Slaughter Fiends at the moment.The third-born of a shamed family, Tarkosi's lot in life is to spend his days as a worker, feeding temperamental lancewings under a harsh master. Demons, magic, secret societies, danger, betrayal and the foundations for the story to continue into book 2.

The Earth-Bound are as ridiculous as The Demented and as empty-headed as The Empty if they think that there is a hope of reopening the portal to the olde world. He is sure he was meant for more than a lifetime of drudgery, working to support every aspect of Shal Gara’s existence. When I started Demon's Reign, I had the same fear that I have before starting every very-long fantasy book I read: that it was going to be a slog.I think this is when the training sequences came in and there was a slow build up before things kicked off again. It was absolutely refreshing not because it’s not a perfect system - the Blood Laws are highly classist - but the fact that it being a matriarchy was not a major part of the story at all.

Unfortunately, while tending to the lancewings, Tarko’s presence is noted by Eagleborn Haidak Baran, lancewing captain.

I was planning to paint more Beastmen to take me up to 10 models, not being careful to see what my opening 100 points would look like. In fact, in this world sexism doesn’t seem to exist at all with one of the highest ranking generals being a woman herself. Character interactions, action scenes are all excellent, and the novel is generally very well written. Bit of Mephiston Red highlighting and a tidy up on the armour above the wings and she’s good to go… Probably to go do bad.
