About this deal

While the hardback binding of this massive tome makes it nearly indestructible, the black, faux leather cover seems over the top. Although, judging by the way artists have portrayed Dionysus, as a slightly effeminate youth, Conan might stick with gloomy Crom. He does so, and his new comrades noted "his was the endurance and vitality of a wolf, his thews steeled and his nerves whetted by the hardness of his life in the world's wastelands.

I'm at 25% of the book, and just started reading third year of Conan publication stories, but already I can see what "Northern Barbarian Hero Trope" Steven Erikson tried to dishevel with his character Karsa Orlong in Malazan Series; something which he failed by the end of the series, given the abundant similarities between the two. Jewels of Gwahlur: A baffling tale of scheming mercenaries, hidden temples, lost humanoids of terrifying violence, a fabled, mystical treasure, religious fanatics, cryptic clues, secret doorways, an actress, and a goddess - although the goddess might be optional, she kept appearing and disappearing like the pea in a shell game.Thank the Gods, Conan is here to save the day, and it is with unfeigned relish that us readers get to see the evil witch get her comeuppance. It does not have print on the front and back of the book, only the spine, but it has a dustcover which the Gollancz edition does not have. In his "dark, scared face there was a suggestion of moodiness; and without being marred by depravity, or definitely evil, there was more than a suggestion of the sinister about his features. But it seems there is some cursed law against killing guardsmen, and the boy and his girl fled away.

This is a short novella, published in 3 parts of 1934, and as such, although short in its structure, longer than most of Robert's stories he was publishing so far. The real Conan is more wide-ranging in skills, more intelligent-seeming, and far more vocal (speaking several languages, and able to captain a ship) along with his incredible agility, superb prowess with weapons and of course his superhuman strength and resilience. Conan isn’t necessarily to be emulated but there is much men can admire in his fearless approach to life. In other words, the author created a modern hero who draws his origins from classical mythology and has all the features that were capable of making him a reference point for the genre of epic fantasy and that I think is of the greatest importance in these short stories. The collection is edited by Stephen Jones and was issued to celebrate the centenary of Howard’s birth. Near the end of Conan's career as a wandering thief, mercenary and pirate, when he has finally settled down as king of Aquilonia, one of the lands in what roughly corresponds to modern-day Europe in Howard's map of the Hyperborean age. Whoever did them needs to learn to draw from the right side of the brain rather than the wrong side of primary school. Howard wrote "over three-hundred stories and seven-hundred poems of raw power and unbridled emotion" and is especially noted for his memorable depictions of "a sombre universe of swashbuckling adventure and darkling horror.

The book was published in 2006 by Gollancz and is an omnibus of their earlier collections The Conan Chronicles, Volume 1: The People of the Black Circle and The Conan Chronicles, Volume 2: The Hour of the Dragon, though the stories are rearranged. Howard is considered as a father of Sword and Sorcery genre) than all of Tolkien's Rings, especially when we take in consideration the flourishing of the Grim Dark in last 30-40 years or so. Prose is also very good, something that goes strong from the very first story and hasn't dropped in quality.

Once Conan arrives, it's with his blood-soaked cutless swinging, but he can't save this tale from its lack of focus.
