About this deal

cut into a log support (that is the initialization every band sawyer has to do at some point, I’ve learned…) causing the blade to dull. I have just fitted this to my BS400 bandsaw and first impressions are that it is a great improvement on the original fence.

As I said, I decided to follow this maxim of sharpness decades ago and I have never had a problem with drift. This appears an excellent fence, designed by Mark Dukinske, author of the very clear book 'The New Complete Guide to the Bandsaw'. With carbide blades being available for similar money to a standard blade these days, or soon enough if ya just can't speak Chinese, seems that there maybe a market for this sorta thing on this side of the pond soon. This fence mounts to most 14 inch (356mm) band saws right out of the box and can be modified to fit many others by drilling a single hole in the aluminium mounting rail. When you glue the fence base and fence face together and add the ribs, be sure the glue-up is perfectly square and the base is flush with the edge of the rabbet at the bottom of the fence face.

You want the hole for the bolt to be far enough away from the fence that you can get a hand drill in there. The locking handle invariably changes the setting slightly once you tighten it, so the process is fiddly and needs to be repeated. The fence rides on a sliding table, which has two parts: a plywood base, and a hardwood runner that rides the angle-iron rail in front. Here I'm cutting a piece of "Peruvian walnut," which will be used on an upcoming instructable I'm currently writing - making a keepsake box. I have pushed tens of thousands of board feet of cherry, hard as well as soft maple, and spruce through an old Delta 14 with a riser block.

The adjustment bolts are indeed not conveniently located and the fence does need regular adjustments so I share the frustration… but it’s not as bad as adjusting the lower bearing guide assembly (I’m wondering what the engineers were thinking when they designed it as it’s not very rigid and has hard to access nuts and bolts which can move in too many directions). This fence mounts to most 14" (356mm) band saws right out of the box and can be modified to fit many others by drilling a single hole in the aluminum mounting rail.

The Kreg® Precision Band Saw Fence easily adjusts to your blade’s drift angle to provide you with a new level of band saw accuracy. If you have a sufficiently heavy "soft face" mallet, a magnetic fence can be adjusted in the active position. A carpenter’s box 2’x18″x9″ looks better then one made with metric measurements, There is a classical golden proportion, look at a 4’x3′ window as opposed to modern metric window sizes. I used the bandsaw to cut away the material, nibbling away until everything inside the box was cut away.
