About this deal

The books were launched in 1964 and introduced a whole generation of children to Peter and Jane and their family, Mother, Father and their dog, Pat. An independent company for much of its life, Ladybird Books became part of the Pearson Group in 1972. Each beautifully illustrated book features the first new illustrations produced in the original Ladybird style for nearly forty years. McNally and Murray (1968) claimed that while the average adult had a speaking vocabulary of about 20,000 words, an extremely large proportion of the language which people produced, and read, was made up of just 250 words.

With fifty titles in the series all told, Adventures From History is the biggest series that Ladybird produced between 1940 and 1981.

Children of the late 1980s might have developed their reading instead with the Puddle Lane Reading Programme, another very popular reading scheme published by Ladybird. The front cover of the later printings displayed the same artwork as seen on the original dustwrappers.
