An independent company for much of its life, Ladybird Books became part of the Pearson Group in 1972. Each beautifully illustrated book features the first new illustrations produced in the original Ladybird style for nearly forty years. With fifty titles in the series all told, Adventures From History is the biggest series that Ladybird produced between 1940 and 1981.

Children of the late 1980s might have developed their reading instead with the Puddle Lane Reading Programme, another very popular reading scheme published by Ladybird.
