About this deal

I have used smaller Crock pots for a not-so-large pot of beans, a small tagine type recipe and to cook smaller sizes of meats. I reckoned on leaving an extra 20cm in all directions around the Dutch oven to fill with the insulation material. It is durable, can handle the high heat of countertop slow cookers and pressure cookers, and is dishwasher safe. Food hazards: Most food can be re heated safely after it has cooled gradually but foods such as rice should not be cooked in this way as there is a potential for toxins to form which may not break down on re heating.

Even on “low”, it’ll be a bit too warm to use as a bread dough incubator and while it might be useful to keep milk at a steady temperature for cheese-making, it just isn’t big enough to be worthwhile. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Chicken – To make this vegetarian you could swap the meat for 2 x 400g tins of mixed beans (in addition to the black beans). If you look at the notes below the recipe, you’ll see that I do often finish this off in the oven but it’s not necessary.

Just like your outdoor clothing if the hay gets damp it won’t insulate half as well so dry the intended materials first – I heated the empty dutch oven first in the oven then stuffed it in the box with the damp hay, this quickly expelled the moisture and although this used extra fuel it only needs doing the first time round as you can re-use the same hay each time! Hay boxes are once again being employed to great advantage in the modern world and not just by the interested cottage small holder or bush crafter. The ply I recycled was quite thin so I added four corner posts to which I glued and screwed the ply. So anyway, I’ve essentially got a broken heavy ceramic pot (which will probably be broken up further into crocks for big outdoor planters), a metal-rimmed glass lid (which will probably be used as a generic pan lid) and the heater-housing, a bowl-shaped (but not sealed) electrical device that heats things slowly and cheaply over a long time. Wrap Dutch oven in an old towel or stuff a pillow case or similar with hay to form a cushion to sit on top of Dutch oven in use – both would prevent bits of hay getting into the oven or sticking around the top waiting to fall in when the lid is removed.

I should think dead bracken, cleavers or even beech leaves – all excellent shelter insulators and available en mass usually- can be utilised. More hay was placed on top of the pot, the fibre board lid added and then finally sealed with the ply board lid. A local farmer kindly donated a bin liner of hay which after placing the Dutch oven inside was used to stuff all the way around and under the cooking pot.Since the Crock Pockets are made from black silicone, staining would be very rare, but if they do get a stain from red sauce or other ingredients, you can soak them in a mixture of baking soda and water for around 4 hours to get rid of it. One of my slow cookers is pretty large and sometimes I just don't need to make that much food at once. I had to cut in a little on the bottom edge because it wasn't notched in to allow for a hook that I don't even know what it's for, but it otherwise fit pretty close to perfect. Or if at home/ work, try emptying the office shredder paper in their or use that spare emergency blanket from your first aid kit. For your slow cooker to work at its best, be sure to aim for somewhere between a half and three quarters full.

The bottom of your slow cooker is the hottest part, so that’s where to place tough cuts of meat or root vegetables. The Crock Pockets also come in a handy little box that makes them perfect for Slow Cooking loving friends and Family! my husband unpacked it and without thinking tipped it over and the crock broke so now I have a second one that is not totally usable. I needed a glass crockpot lid to replace my vintage one, which had deep cracks and chips and was no longer safe to use. Other designs including card board boxes, old ammo tins (id question the transfer of heat here compared to a wooden box) and even Cool boxes (Styro foam lined) can be ideal.
