About this deal

As to chain-life on a _proper_ chainsaw, I consider the chains to be service-items and simply replace the one on my trusty firewood-sawing Husqvarna every year. A chain brake, it should stop the chain dead in its tracks when the brake is triggered by forward movement of the guard, usually done in most cutting positions by using the back of the hand that's holding the top part of the main handle, can also be triggered by sudden inertia such as kick back, if the chain brake doesn't function as intended then the saw must not be used until the problem is rectified. This tungsten carbide cutter is flying around at 10,000 rpm, inches from your knuckles with no protection! This alert follows reports of injuries arising from kickback caused by the chain gripping the cutting surface and forcing the angle grinder to sharply turn or jump out of the hand of the operator, leading to hand, finger, head injury or fatality. I think the chain was supposed to slip a bit on the disk to reduce the chance of kickback, but the whole idea frightened me!

Under the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 only safe machinery can be placed on the market. That obvious sounding advice overlooks an important feature of the disk: the chain is free to spin on the disc so cannot seize. Two chainsaw discs were reported as having serious risk of injury in the OPSS Product Safety Report (No 7 – 19 February 2021).

Some time later I also saw a man wood cutting using an angle grinder fitted with a course circular saw blade without the guard on.If the disc grips the cutting surface the grinder can jump or turn sharply and be torn out of your hands. The relevant standard BS 60745-2-3 requires product instructions to bear this warning “Do not attach a saw chain woodcarving blade or toothed saw blade. These products present a risk of serious injury or fatality from the disc slipping or producing kick back when in use. I genuinely don't know which tool it is designed to a be attached to, given that it has the angle grinder fitting, and is always marketed as being for an angle grinder.By accepting all cookies, you agree to our use of cookies to deliver and maintain our services and site, improve the quality of Reddit, personalize Reddit content and advertising, and measure the effectiveness of advertising. The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS), the UK’s national product safety regulator, has issued a Safety Alert for a chainsaw disc attachment that has been incorrectly sold for use with angle grinders. Typical flat out chain speed at say around 13,000 RPM for the engine on a chainsaw is around 20-25 metres per sec, also chainsaw's have or should have a chain catcher fitted as a safety feature. When I bought my first chain saw, I also bought a sharpening kit which includes a file and a metal filing guide that fits over the chain for ensuring the teeth and the rakers are filed to their respective correct levels.

A friend of mine still (40 years later) has a diagonal scar right across his face from eye to chin where a "Partner" (petrol angle grinder) that was fitted with a 12" circular saw disk kicked back into him. There is no place for an attachment of that kind any more than fitting a circular saw blade to an angle grinder but idiots are always going to do it anyway. Additionally, on disc cutting courses and requal I was taught to check the speed of disk was sufficient for the output RPM. However, angle grinders are not designed for use with such accessories as they do not incorporate the safety features required for electric chainsaws. Back in the UK I used it a few times and found it good - although it would eat your house if it got away from you.A national warning has been issued by the Office for Product Safety and Standards for the immediate removal from sale of angle grinder chainsaw discs. OPSS is working with local authority Trading Standards to identify and take appropriate action against these chainsaw attachments.
