About this deal

This bold volume outlines the laws of power in their unvarnished essence, synthesizing the philosophies of Machiavelli, Sun Tzu, Carl von Clausewitz, and other infamous strategists. I don’t recognise the woman on our doorstep, with her blonde highlights, a diamond bracelet identical to my own and a bouncing baby boy in her arms.

I found myself craving a more immersive and engaging reading experience, which this book failed to provide.Whether you’re a believer or a skeptic, this richly illustrated history book provides a fresh approach to the extensive and complex story of witchcraft, magic and the occult. Thank you very much for the terrific review, sweet Willow (I am with you 100% regarding misappropriation/misuse of the word gypsy). Tom is an expert on the history of magic who has taught at the universities of Oxford, Leeds, Derby and Hertfordshire, as well as here at Imperial College. They make it seem as though Wicca and Neo-Pagans are all the same and their section of heathenry focuses only on the unfortunate use of the religion in the spread of nationalist propaganda in Germany.

I felt like it was a great starting point for someone who is interested in learning anything about magic, witchcraft, or the occult, and a very basic understanding of how the practice has changed through the years. The most comprehensive illustrated history of witchcraft available, A History of Magic, Witchcraft and the Occult will enthrall and fascinate you with its lavish illustrated, accessible entries, whether you are a believer or skeptic. My career as a voice actor had been over for months and me and my little girl Scarlet were living back at my mum’s place. In this wealth-inspiring listening journey, Rachel reveals the secrets of how to set goals, manage time wisely, build essential support systems, break free from financial constraints, and make savvy money decisions. That's why we create books for everyone that explore ideas and nurture curiosity about the world we live in. Often when dealing with ideas that show up in multiple cultures, people might confuse the idea that shares the same word because English is a language built by a specific culture. I felt like a failure professionally—and with Scarlet having problems at school, as a parent as well.

There’s some great art and photography, and it’s a great starting point to help you figure out what you’d like to read about in greater detail. Join Susan Cain, an international best-selling author on the power of introverts who will help you tune out all of your everyday stresses and conflicts and tune into living a Quiet Life. As I show her inside, I notice her eyes grow wide as she takes in our spacious hallway, and the big squashy sofas that we all used to pile on. The heavy focus on presenting facts and information without a cohesive storytelling approach made it challenging for me to engage with the content. If you’re interested in learning more about the history of magic, I would also recommend The History of Magic by Chris Gosden (which gives a more in-depth survey of the subject, and which I reviewed in a previous blog post), and from a British perspective, Pagan Britain by Professor Ronald Hutton and The Book of English Magic by Philip Carr-Gomm and Richard Heygate. By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. Engaging text and lavish illustrations with over 500 full-color images that bring the subject to life. A History of Magic, Witchcraft, and the Occult is a short, beautifully illustrated history of magical practices around the world since the beginning of man. Este libro nos habla de la magia, el ocultismo y la brujería a lo largo de la historia de la humanidad.

As with most DK books, this book is full of images, many of which I've seen before but others that were completely new to me. On the other hand, I would have liked to have read a passing mention in the alchemy section that the great work of turning lead into gold is often seen a metaphor for the purification of the soul. over time, occasionally spotlighting a particular person or group of people or some other big moment in the history of magic, witchcraft, and the occult, like the Salem witch trials and or pervasive occultism that hides in plain view, like the spirit of Christmas. The visually appealing illustrations were overshadowed by the lackluster writing style, which failed to engage me as a reader. The perfect introduction to magic and the occult, it explores forms of divination from astrology and palmistry to the Tarot and runestones, mystical plants and potions such as mandrake, the presence of witchcraft in literature from Shakespeare's Macbeth to the Harry Potter series, and the ways in which magic has interacted with religion.
