About this deal

But there are two main things I have a problem with in this book. The first is the main character’s grief. Now I know this is a humorous book, I totally get that. But humour and pain can co-exist quite nicely, especially in fiction. My gripe is the main character feels pain, but not quite enough. This is not to say that the pain of the childless can’t be overcome, not at all. All I’m Life is rarely a straight line, and as the saying goes, 'Life is not a puzzle to be solved, but a dance to be danced’. That's certainly the case for our forty-something protagonist, Nell, and we have a front-row seat to her grand rhapsody. In books, TV shows and films, everything is dialled up to be fantasy, the perfect wife/husband, the perfect children, the perfect house, the perfect figure, the perfect job, the perfect life. But in real life, no relationship, no friendship, no sex, no job is perfect. Whilst I'm aware this book is also a fiction and should be a fantasy, it really holds a mirror up to us as a society. It talks about the negatives of being a woman in society, making it so familiar and relatable, but shows that you don't have to be perfect to be perfect.

Potter’s writing grips you with prose that you’ll remember, this description of routine a prime example - “Routine is a funny old thing. It gets such a bad rap. We think of it as dull and predictable and long to escape. But routine is like a clothes hanger. You hang your days on it and it gives them shape. Without it life has no structure, if you’re not careful it can collapse in a heap on the floor” In the hilarious and heartfelt follow-up to Confessions of a Forty-Something F##k Up Nell discovers that there's no such thing as having it all figured out. I really loved this catch up with the characters. I leave them at the end of this book wishing them well, and wondering if we will get another peek into their lives again in a few years, I hope so. I had not heard of this author, and it was a 'stumble across' as I browsed an interstate catalogue (the perks of working in a library, and knowing where to look for the location of a book, Australia wide). BorrowBox is great! This book has such a witty way of expressing the loss, the confusion, the desperation to be successful according to a set of standards that we have had nothing whatsoever to do with creating. It’s a reminder that sometimes where we find ourselves is exactly right, as it is, and that nothing is ultimately beyond redemption if you know how to view yourself and your own personal journey. It’s rare for any book to actually make me laugh out loud like this one did (more than once) and for a book to resonate on so many levels with me.

I wanted to love this book, I really did. As someone who is forty without the husband and children I’d always thought I’d have (and no real prospects on the horizon), I thought I’d finally found something I could relate to. There is nothing out there that’s I’ve found so far in literature for women like us and when I saw this book, I thought ‘about time!’ I thought I would laugh, cry and take comfort. But this book really triggered me. I've said it before that I'm not overly fond of books that talk about the pandemic, as I want escapism, I don't want to read about something I lived through. But Alexandra has found a balance here. She's mentioned it - as anyone would if their book is set during that time - but it's not a main plot point. It helps give context to a few things, but the story would equally be as great without it.Unwittingly, Nell seems to stumble from one incident to another. Grounded in familiar everyday family and work situations, these situations remain plausible despite being a work of fiction. Nell is also utterly relatable as the continual survivor and you can't help but cheer her on. No prísť o kamarátky bolo v mnohých ohľadoch oveľa ťažšie, ako prísť oňho.. A life affirming, insightful, savvy and meaningful contemporary fiction piece, I am very happy to send my full recommendation to Confessions of a Forty Something by Alexandra Potter. The story of Nell Stevens’ struggle through her imperfect, messy life doesn’t just make brilliant fiction, it’s turning into a cultural revolution!' Matt Cain

I won’t lie; there were moments I thought, ‘Is this story ever going to end?’ But those short, snappy chapters? They were like little pit stops in a marathon, ensuring I was well-fed with light humor and hope as I journeyed through. The thing is, no matter how settled you think you are, life always has alternative plans, and Nell's life is no different. Synopsis (It's a fiction book, so it helps…from Netgalley, the provider of the book for me to review.) Nell Stevens series called More Confessions of a Forty-Something F**k Up by Alexandra Potter and this also had me Laughing out aloud.

This book is a sequel to a book that I haven't read, however that didn't stop me from thoroughly enjoying this one.
