Can I take Amoxicillin and NyQuil at the same time? İ have been taking amoxicillin for three days but my symptoms got worse...started coughing every week and feel sick and my chest feels heavy.

Answer

There are no drug interactions between amoxicillin (Amoxil)and Nyquil (acetaminophen, dextromethorphan, and doxylamine). They can safely be taken together. However, worseningsymptoms could be a sign that the antibiotic is not working. It may benecessary to check with your physician about other treatment options. Below, wewill discuss more about the two medications.

Information On Amoxicillin

Amoxicillinis a beta-lactam antibiotic that is used for treatment of respiratory, sinus, and ear infections, among others. Because amoxicillin is a type of penicillin,it should not be taken in patients witha penicillin allergy. Reported allergies to penicillins are thought to behigher than the rate of true penicillin allergies. It is important to let yourdoctor and pharmacist know your allergies or other adverse reactions beforetaking any medication.

Amoxicillin is well absorbed in the GI tract and is metabolizedand eliminated primarily through the kidney. It is not extensively metabolizedby CYP enzymes so will not impact metabolism of alcohol. Amoxicillin can causerash, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

In healthy patients, amoxicillin has a half-life around 1-2hours, meaning the drug should be completely cleared within 12 hours. Inpatients with declined kidney function, the half-life may be significantlyincreased up to 13 hours (could take several days to be completely cleared).

Information On Nyquil

Nyquil comes in avariety of formulations and contains several different ingredients. Nyquil Cold& Flu contains the following:

Acetaminophen (pain relief, fever reducer)Dextromethorphan (cough suppressant)Doxylamine (antihistamine)

Acetaminophen is an analgesic that can be taken for a widevariety of acute and chronic pain ailments. Acetaminophen has a half-life of2-3 hours. Acetaminophen gets absorbed at 85-98% and reaches peak concentrations within 30-60 minutes.Typically, acetaminophen can startworking within 15 minutes. Acetaminophen can have negative impacts on theliver, especially at higher doses for an extended period of time.

Dextromethorphan (commonly referred to as DM on manyover-the-counter products) is a coughsuppressant that reduces the urge to cough. It is best to preventbothersome dry cough or a cough that doesn’t involve mucus from the lowerrespiratory system.
