About this deal

In December 2001, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a final Guidance on Potassium Iodide as a Thyroid Blocking Agent in Radiation Emergencies) (PDF - 40 KB). This group has the lowest risk of thyroid cancer or thyroid injury after radioactive iodine exposure. It’s also crucial that pregnant and breastfeeding individuals take the proper dose of potassium iodide to protect themselves and their baby.

The Scottish Environmental protection agency constantly measures radiation levels in the UK and although increases were noted in 2011 after the tsunami that crippled Japan's Fukushimas reactors, these settled to background levels. Potassium iodide is commonly indicated after accidental exposure to radiation to avoid excessive accumulation of radioactive iodine, particularly to protect the thyroid gland. Individuals with multinodular goiter, Graves' disease, and autoimmune thyroiditis should be treated with caution -- especially if dosing extends beyond a few days. Although FDA has not made specific recommendations for individual purchase or use of KI, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) supplies KI tablets, in accordance with FDA dosing guidelines, to states (including tribal governments) that request it for populations within the 10-mile emergency planning zone of a nuclear power plant. Avantor® can help with a robust line of safety products and personal protective equipment -- from waste bins to safety signs.

This happens because the thyroid has already absorbed the KI, and there is no room to absorb the radioactive iodine. As with all drug products, the manufacturer must specify an expiration date of the drug on either the package or the individually wrapped tablet.

EXPIRATION: 05/2032 - The NRC has stated that the shelf life of Potassium Iodide Tablets can be extended greater than 10 years due to the inherent stability of iodine salt mineral supplements. The NRC did not require use of potassium iodide by the general public because the NRC believes that current emergency planning and protective measures--evacuation and sheltering--are adequate and protective of public health and safety. It is less hygroscopic (absorbs water less readily) than sodium iodide, making it easier to work with.To facilitate use of KI in emergency situations, on December 23, 2002, FDA published Guidance for Industry KI in Radiation Emergencies - Questions and Answers. It only protects the thyroid from radioactive iodine (I-131) and does not protect other parts of the body from other types of radiation. The risk of harm from KI increases when it is not taken exactly as directed by a medical or public health official. A newborn (a baby less than 1 month old) could develop hypothyroidism if they take more than the suggested amount of potassium iodide. Can potassium iodide (KI) be used to protect against radiation from bombs other than radioactive iodine, such as radiation from a dirty bomb?

Avantor can help maintain cleanroom standards with protective apparel and environmental monitoring equipment. We are committed to providing you with products and processes that make it easy for you to focus on results. You should keep taking it once a day until the health department says to stop, or you are out of the emergency area. The greatest concentration of iodine is in your thyroid, but your muscles, brain, salivary glands, and skin also require it.To date, the only observed changes during stability (shelf-life) testing have been the failure of some batches of KI tablets to meet dissolution specifications.
