About this deal

Atlee Pine is the lone resident FBI agent in Shattered Rock, Arizona and that is just the way she likes it. Also of interest is Baldacci’s commentary on the political situation in the US and discussion around the lack of trust that Americans currently have in their own government agencies who no longer seem to be above the law. David Baldacci is a name synonymous with excellence-a consummate storyteller who turns the conventional into unconventional.

Her off sider in this story is also a woman, and an older one whose usual position is as her assistant in the office. A lifelong Virginian, David is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Virginia School of Law. A couple of the park rangers who were involved in the dead mule / missing hiker case are suddenly transferred to a different National Park and Atlee is told to take a vacation. Admitting that it’s his first time attempting a female lead, Baldacci does a good job of creating a character that is easy to associate with, and complex enough to be realistic. The concept of David and Goliath is not a new one as the underdog successfully takes on government and all its resources.Even though I don't think it would be a spoiler, I'm not going to explain the cause for her developing in such a direction, because that is the fresh take, early, regarding this character that makes these first few pages intriguing to read.

But Pine had never allowed herself the time or opportunity to dig deep enough into her psyche to prove that theory true or false. It is thirty years since FBI special agent Atlee Pine’s twin sister, Mercy, was taken from the room they shared as young children. What a blast-off for Baldacci's most memorable protagonist yet--Atlee Pine is a heroine for our times, a fighter for justice we'd all be glad to have on our side. David is also the cofounder, along with his wife, of the Wish You Well Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting literacy programs across the United States.A mile-a-minute thriller that proves once again why David Baldacci has readers the world over flocking for more ! Having a virtually indestructible FBI Officer who never makes a mistake, makes it hard to ever feel like there's any real jeopardy, in what on the face of it should be a taut conspiracy thriller. Will Atlee win the fight for the democracy of the country she swore to protect, or will her battle end with her life? Way over the top with a story which would have been better placed as a James Bond plot (and we know how bad the Bond films were before Daniel Craig came along or Sean Connery I might add). For me this book was a bit more Camel Club than it was psychopathic serial killer type thriller (which is more in my bailiwick!

Pine sets up the initial investigation but soon discovers that some of the FBI’s top brass are watching events very closely. His novels have been translated into over 45 languages and sold in more than 80 countries, with 150 million copies sold worldwide. Then the prose turned to The Grand Canyon a history lesson on the great icon it was not going anywhere just plodded along to say I am disappointed is an understatement just ahhhhhh. Long Road to Mercy is David Baldacci at his best, introducing an engrossing new heroine, FBI Agent Atlee Pine. Having lost her twin sister at the age of six to a kidnapper, Atlee has been trying to remember the night Mercy was abducted.I’m not sure we have them here in Australia, or perhaps we do and I’m not enough of a country gal to know. Atlee’s been at Shattered Rock (as close as you can get to the Grand Canyon without being in the park) a year or so and has built a place and reputation for herself in the community but she holds herself back. Although the trip to the prison to visit the serial killer felt a little too familiar, and raises other questions in the reader's minds, it was enough different and personal enough that it was not so similar to other stories in this genre. Narrowly escaping death, the two now are certain that something rotten in those canyon walls besides a decaying mule.
