About this deal

That said, this isn't the kind of drive you'll want to use for day-to-day app and file storage, as random access speeds on a 20TB HDD is about as horrible as you'd imagine it is. There are three active vendors in the consumer hard drive space - Seagate, Toshiba, and Western Digital.

The Seagate Skyhawk AI HDD is designed with “AI'' firmware to improve the drive’s ability to handle recording, video analysis, and GPU analytics workloads. The IronWolf Pro has larger caches for many of its models with the same storage capacity, including 20TB, and also a corresponding workload rating increase, from 300 to 550 TB/year.And, it’s not hard to see why, Seagate BarraCuda drives offer a great gigabyte-per-dollar ratio and speed benefits to top it off. The challenge in picking any hard drive, of course, is balancing workload needs with total drive costs. This drive is the perennial budget HDD favorite and is widely available, has a decent range of capacity options, and doesn’t break the bank.

Seagate opted to stop releasing BarraCuda Pro drives above the 14TB capacity point, but Toshiba has a 16TB X300 and 18TB X300 Pro available for purchase. You must plug it into the wall with a power adapter, so it’s not easy to tote around different places.

Having a single drive storing potentially important data is always something of a gamble since physical mechanisms can, and do, go wrong. And, we’d only recommend that action if the drive were outside warranty, and you suspected that the USB board or PSU had died, and not the physical drive. While SSDs have taken over the role of the primary drive in most computing systems, hard drives continue to be the storage media of choice in areas dealing with large amount of relatively cold data. As a hard drive, you can count on the Backup Plus Hub to provide dependable storage and quick transfer speeds. In light of this, users should treat money spent on shucked drives as a sunk cost, and ensure that such drives are used only in non-critical scenarios.

It has strong performance in random workloads thanks to the 7200 RPM spindle speed, and it also comes with 512MB of DRAM cache for the 14TB and larger models. This version doesn’t even have a power on/off switch, so the drive becomes active the moment it is connected. Those that work at home, like many people these days, want files they’ve modified to be secured the moment that they’ve closed them, not an hour later. If you’re just looking to add space inexpensively, though, this is the way to go; just be aware that some capacities come in both an SMR and CMR variant.
