About this deal

This turns out to be a running motif, and later, during Asterios and Hana's first meeting, his blue outlines begin to fill with pink haze, and her pink shadows become outlined in blue, until they both have nearly the same appearance. Asterios Polyp will cause comic-book buffs to swoon, sure, but the narrative -- after a fire, an arrogant architect slowly begins to rebuild his own life -- makes it much more than a pretty picture book.

Não sou nem eu que digo isso, Scott McCloud grande teorico dessa mídia, compartilha das mesmas palavras sobre o quadrinho. The visual style used to contrast the small-town escape from his previously elite life are what you'd expect: curves, visual ellipses, and informal open-framed illustration versus squares, cubes, angles, and tight frame composition. In Asterios Polyp -- the best of the summer's new releases -- Mazzucchelli employs spotlights, coloring schemes, knitting, Aristophanes, an identical twin who died at birth and the wide array of secretions from a woman's body to lead us into the self-centered world of the title character even as the center implodes. Meet Asterios middle-aged, meagerly successful architect and teacher, aesthete and womanizer, whose life is wholly upended when his New York City apartment goes up in flames. On top of Mazzucchelli's tight reign over his colour spectrum, there is ample evidence that he maintains the same level of control over his linework and design.

This brazenly original and complex work is easily one of the year’s best novels, graphic or otherwise…Brilliant. It is a testament to how distancing the story is that at the end, when the asteroid destroys everyone (itself a pretty immature narrative device), I didn't feel shocked or anything. It’s a testimony to Mazzucchelli’s skills that by the end of Polyp’s odyssey, the arrogant academic has been rendered a tragic and sympathetic figure deserving of the tale’s (possibly) happy ending. Mazzucchelli experiments with numerous art styles and pushes the envelope with challenging digressions into philosophy, religion and mortality throughout Polyp’s tale.Con esta novela gráfica he quedado fascinada sobre todo en el aspecto formal: el dibujo, el cambio en los colores para caracterizar a los personajes o para indicar el tiempo. I do, however, feel quite comfortable talking about what I think about something, so in this series I will happily do just that. I get that part of conversing in general is the act of sharing, but not to the level of attention-grabbing and narcissism. Early on, during an aside, Mazzucchelli presents a random group of people, each drawn in a different style and color, as a visual representation of how unique every person is.

Now, after a decade-and-a-half, he has re-re-emerged with Asterios Polyp , an epic, emotionally rich, symbol-laden work that promises to redefine the graphic novel. Asterios Polyp grew out of a story idea that would have filled the entire fourth issue of Rubber Blanket. De esas que cuando las terminas, regresas al inicio y vuelves a empezar (y en la cual siempre encuentras algo nuevo). With “Asterios Polyp,” Mazzucchelli has put paid to that charge: It’s funny, it’s warm and it’s beautiful.Questioned about the impracticality of his design, Mazzucchelli joked that it was "the most frustrating package [I] could come up with". Y la gente que se encuentra por el camino, gente muy diferente a los intelectuales con los que está acostumbrado a tratar, le ayudarán a evolucionar.
