About this deal

Gordon & MacPhail has a deep inventory of rare whiskies laid down by previous generations of the Urquhart family. These liquid treasures all come from demolished distilleries; St. Magdalene/Linlithgow and Glen Mhor distilleries closed in 1983, and Lochside Distillery stopped production in 1992. The Private Collection label indicates whiskies selected by members of the Urquhart family, the fourth generation to own and run the 125 year old business, and each expression has been matured from the beginning under the stewardship of Gordon & MacPhail in its own casks. The St. Magdalene was matured in a refill American oak hogshead, and the Glen Mhor and Lochside come from refill sherry hogsheads. Beyond these three bottlings coming to the U.S., Gordon & MacPhail will also release bottlings from Pittyvaich, Inverleven, Convalmore, Imperial, and Banff in select international markets as part of the Recollection Series.

Independent bottler and distiller Gordon & MacPhail has launched the Recollection Series, an annual release of rare whiskies from closed distilleries bottled under its Private Collection label. In honor of the 10 th anniversary of A Midwinter Night's Dram, High West is also releasing this limited edition as a distillery exclusive. The Encore likewise uses Rendezvous Rye as its base, with the blend of rye whiskeys receiving a finish in white port barrels.Master blender Rachel Barrieis an expert at sherry maturation, and the GlenDronach Grandeur series represents some of her finest work. Batch 10 was released in 2019 with only 240 bottles sent to the U.S. Aged for 27 years, that whisky scored 93 points. The Hibiki Blossom Harmony 2021 brought more of the same well-balanced, perfectly crafted whisky, but with a twist – the blenders at Suntory gave Hibiki liquid a Sakura cask finish, allowing us to explore their fine craftsmanship from a completely new angle. Hibiki is a harmonious blend of various malt and grain whiskies from Suntory's Yamazaki, Hakushu and Chita distilleries. Constantly pushing the boundaries of what Japanese Whisky can be, the House of Suntory continues to explore and experiment with various wood types. The Sakura cask was one that intrigued Fifth Generation Chief Blender Shinji Fukuyo.

Since 1923, Suntory has been renowned as the pioneer of Japanese Whisky for its House of Master Blenders and for their Art of Blending. Founder Shinjiro Torii built Japan's first malt whisky distillery in Yamazaki, and the Suntory legacy continued with Torii's son and Suntory's second Master Blender, Keizo Saji, who continued to establish distilleries including the Hakushu distillery. As the generations of Suntory's master blenders carry on, Suntory Whisky remains committed to heritage and innovation. The House of Suntory has been named four-time Distiller of the Year at the International Spirits Challenge in London, UK (2010, 2012, 2013, 2014). Suntory Whiskies are subtle, refined and complex. The portfolio includes two single malt whiskies: Yamazaki—Japan's number one single malt, multi-layered and profound, and Hakushu—verdant, fresh, and delicately smoky; and two blends: the noble blend, Hibiki—Japan's most highly awarded blended whisky and Suntory Whisky Toki. The House of Suntory portfolio also offers Roku Japanese Gin and Haku Japanese Vodka. Created from Japanese ingredients by the master artisans at the House of Suntory, Roku Gin and Haku Vodka represent the nature and spirit of Japan. At this point, a new release of The Vaults is cause for excitement, as every previous release has proven delicious—last year's edition scored 93 points, while the 2020 whiskey scored a 94. While it will be available nationwide through the holiday season, it is on allocation, so keep your eyes peeled in-store and online if you're hoping to secure a bottle. Expert Blending: The Hibiki Blossom Harmony 2022 is crafted by chief blender Shinji Fukoyo, ensuring a harmonious and balanced whisky. B and B-: Good and above average. The best of the mass market whiskeys fit in this category, as do the bulk of the premium brands. A B- is three stars. For the new 2022 release, they have taken the same approach and, as expected, it’s smooth, gentle and moreish, with the light fruits and creaminess of Hibiki whisky merging seamlessly with the gentle floral tones and light spices imparted by the Sakura cask. The end result is a unique, memorable drinking experience and a whisky that is well worth telling your friends about. Hibiki Blossom Harmony’s unique bottle design has 24 facets encircling the bottle, with each facet connecting to the next in a natural harmony. The Sakura is Japan’s unofficial national flower and the Sakura blossom season in early Spring is a meaningful event for the Japanese people and has delighted those eager to see the delicate flowers welcome the coming of warmer weather for over 1000 years . For this expression, fifth generation chief blender Shinji Fukuyo wanted to focus on the wood. “I have been mesmerised by the sakura cask for the last five years now due to its symbolism, but also because of its distinctive, subtly floral and spicy aroma, and flavour notes,” he said. Coming in at 43 percent ABV, the whisky opens with a delicate floral bouquet followed by lush honey, orange peel, jasmine, and rich chocolate. The House of Suntory , which is the founding House of Japanese whisky, was founded in 1923 by Shinjiro Torii when he opened the first official malt whisky distillery in Yamazaki. Since then The House of Suntory has created what’s considered to be some of the most highly-awarded blended whiskies on the international market as well as some of the most prestigious and honored whiskies in the world. Torii was a pioneering whisky maker whose goal was to create authentic western-style spirits that would appeal to Japanese tastes. Hibiki, meaning “resonance” or “echo” in Japanese, is said to encapsulate the philosophy of The House of Suntory, which is ‘To Create Harmony with People and Nature.’I have been mesmerized by the Sakura cask for the last five years now due to its symbolism, but also because of its distinctive, subtly floral and spicy aroma and flavor notes," says Fukuyo. "There have been many experiments with malt and grain whisky components, and we found that there was a special alchemy between the grain whiskies and the Sakura cask. It is this special relationship – harmony – that inspired me to create this blend." Yes you absoloutely should invest in Hibiki Blossom Harmony. The series is only two years old at the time of writing, but already we’ve seen botles increease hugely in value over time. With only 1000 bottles of every release, this is a gold mine for whisky collectors. The beautiful boxes and bottles are part of what makes this whisky worth owning, so make sure you keep those in good condition. A collection made up of these releases from a few years could be worth millions in 25 years or so. How long will the Hibiki Blossom Harmony series go on for? Image from Reddit These are some of the reasons why distillers will opt for oak. Well, that, and some legislation too.
