About this deal

When a reading does not meet the required standards, it is rejected as an official record and expunged from the UK’s weather and climate observation records. Setting everything up is pretty easy. There's some fiddly calibration to be done with the rain gauge and anemometer, and it's worth investing in a shield for the outdoor thermometer, which Netatmo can supply, but you're given clear instructions all the way. Where Netatmo fails primarily is in installation. The setup process is convoluted and buggy, and it seems to have gotten worse over the years instead of better. Netatmo’s piecemeal approach also means you have to install each component individually, a complex process that involves strategically pressing buttons and removing/reinstalling batteries at just the right time. This process was even more complex because the sensors Netatmo sent me came with preinstalled batteries, all of which were dead on arrival, and the batteries in the wind meter were actually corroded. The system also has a tendency to randomly lose its Wi-Fi connection without warning, only to recover it a few hours later.

On the whole, we were generally impressed with the accuracy of the Netatmo Weather Station. Its outside temperature, humidity and rainfall readings never strayed too far from other local and official weather stations, and were typically a good representation of the local conditions. The Outdoor Module of the Netatmo Smart Home Weather Station is durable and moisture resistant. However, to maximise its lifespan and ensure more accurate readings, it’s recommended not to place it in direct sunlight or expose it to particularly bad weather. Depending on where the Outdoor Module user lives or the garden/balcony layout, it can be challenging to find an appropriate place to install the Module. This is no longer a problem with the Shield. Whether it’s sunny, wet or windy, the Outdoor Module measures the temperature accurately. The Weather Station Sure enough, it has. Today’s home weather stations are cheaper, more powerful, and do more than ever. Also, the old guard in this category have stepped up their mobile app game to compete with the newcomers on the market. Netatmo’s app is what makes it one of the best products in this space. It’s intuitive and easy to read, and it collects data forever. Want to see a graph of daily high and low temperatures over the last month? It’s easy to zoom in and out of the data to pinpoint exactly what interests you. Until I replaced my old Netatmo system with a new one for this review, I had access to years’ worth of data all in one place. Netatmo’s temperature gauge is quite accurate, but unfortunately its forecasts aren’t the best, with an average variance of 4.8 degrees. However, sometimes Netatmo really nails it when other units whiff: It was the only unit in the roundup to accurately predict a freak warm day in the middle of the test period. The Tempest ( Rating: 6/10) is a recent entry to the scene, and like Netatmo it aims to give you a lot of information with a limited footprint. Though the hardware is larger than Netatmo’s, it’s more discreet than AcuRite and Ambient’s, looking a bit like a bird feeder and intended to be mounted on a pole (not included) somewhere in your yard or on your roof. The system also requires an indoor module that relays data from the sensor to your Wi-Fi network, but that module doesn’t provide any indoor climate information. Setup is fairly painless, at least in comparison to most other weather stations on the market. The good news is there’s lots of information relayed: wind speed/direction, rainfall, UV, solar radiation, barometric pressure, temperature, humidity, dew point, heat index, and wind chill. While the station has seemingly solid accuracy (its 5-day error rate was 3.1 degrees Fahrenheit), the sensor recorded considerably lower “low” temps than all the other sensors, sometimes by as much as 10 degrees. Also, its sensor always tended to run about a degree lower than all the others even when it was warm outside. It's really hard to find any fault with the Netatmo Smart Carbon Monoxide Alarm. I guess the price is enough to put some people off, especially when you consider some households might need more than one.

This extra data will be extremely useful in forecasting and monitoring localised extreme weather events such as heavy snow and rain. WOW has been developed by the Met Office in partnership with the Royal Meteorological Society and the Department for Education. These weather stations measure a large variety of different meteorological parameters, including air temperature; atmospheric pressure; rainfall; wind speed and direction, humidity; cloud height and visibility. Firstly, it links to your home's WiFi. There's no hub, just a very easy connection process on a smartphone app. This means, straight away, you can be alerted to any presence of Carbon Monoxide with an instant notification. Netatmo, the leading French smart home company for a safer and more comfortable home, announced today the launch of the Shelter accessory for the Smart Home Weather Station. But maybe that's not good enough for you. Maybe you really need to know what the weather is like directly outside your front door. After all, the guy down the street could have his weather station set up next to his barbecue grill, spoiling the readings. I get it, and if you need this level of agency, a weather station’s definitely for you. With that in mind, I looked at four leading brands—all within a “giftable” price range—to see whose weather is better, and whose forecast is finest. To gauge overall accuracy, I recorded each station’s high and low predictions for five consecutive days, compared those numbers against that station’s own measured high/lows for each day, then calculated the average variance in degrees for each of the 10 data points.

What happens to the weather station data?

The modified hamburger button on the top-left gives users access to more in-depth meteorological data and I thoroughly enjoyed the Netatmo Weathermap feature. This allows you to take a look at Netatmo weather station readings in your area and around the globe. Together, these individual stations create a very cool, global patchwork of localized data. It’s easy enough to load line graphs illustrating long-term changes in humidity, temperature, noise, etc. and zoom-in on specific moments down to the minute. Truth be told, it does feel a little constricted zooming in and out of a line graph on a smartphone to take a closer look at granular data and toggling through to compare separate graphs. It does feel a little constricted zooming in and out of a line graph on a smartphone to take a closer look at granular data. I can also keep an eye on how hot or cold my south-facing bedroom has been over the previous weeks, which is handy for setting up my radiator thermostat now that central-heating season is upon us.

All Met Office UK weather observations are subject to an internationally-agreed rigorous quality-control process. For new official records, we undertake further careful investigation to ensure that the measurement taken is robust, reliable, is feasible in the meteorological set-up and adheres to international World Meteorological Organisation standards. This is why you’ll often see observations records labelled ‘provisionally broken’ before the full verification has taken place, and for official confirmation of the record to be announced a few weeks later.Frost hollow where overnight temperatures on still clear nights may be far lower than at neighbouring locations. The smartness doesn't stop there though. The Netatmo's battery is stated to last around 10 years - that's pretty standard, but an additional feature this little device boasts is a self-testing facility. If there's a problem, it'll let you know. Britain is undoubtedly a nation obsessed with the weather. Whether it's the wind, rain, hail or whatever else our dynamic climate may throw at us, it's always a reliable conversation starter.
