About this deal

Reading this for a second time was interesting because it gave me a chance to notice things I probably didn’t notice the first time around. Gamache’s reaction to mothballs is an example of a negative or traumatic memory without a visual image altho he still remembers that night vividly.

He’s told he can quit his job, but leaving the Manoir is out of the question while they investigate the murder. We are at first led to believe that his father didn’t love him, and even his mother is harsh and often cruel. So, I took notice of every time Penny mentioned (view spoiler) [bees, ants, wasps or any other insect that would be drawn to sugar. That conversation that was the first of many fun strategy conversations with one of the cleverest minds I know. The Finneys/Morrows are textbook dysfunctional, from their treatment of one another through to the odd way in which one of the children is kept isolated from others.

Finney stopped then looked over to the four chairs, one of which contained a young woman and her child, both very unlike the other Morrows. The murder this time is one I was saddened by; the murderer was one I felt so strongly about that I hollered at the pages, "Don't do it! There are other moral lessons to had, too, of course; the dangers of greed, envy, jealousy, and being judgmental are also pounded into the reader’s head. His head is bowed, and although he’s about to say something, whatever he’s seeing has literally turned him to stone. And yet, the second time he went there to see Insp Francoeur after the murder of Madelaine was solved, this man asked for his resignation. She has won numerous awards, including a CWA Dagger and the Agatha Award (seven times), and was a finalist for the Edgar Award for Best Novel.
