About this deal

Still, it was a fun read and I really enjoyed reading about Juliet's journey and her finding herself.

we got to explore not just what it meant for juliet to be a lesbian, but also what it means to be a lesbian of colour living in a world that seems to want to put her down. But Juliet has a plan, sort of, one that’s going to help her figure out this whole “Puerto Rican lesbian” thing. During this internship she gets introduced to a super diverse group of queer people and finds a queer space to belong for the first time.I also wish Juliet as a character had a bit more agency in the story, she just seems to get bounced from situation to situation, from one character to yet another character.

No suelo dar 5 estrellas a novelas gráficas porque siempre siento que es muy poquito lo que nos pueden dar, pero Juliet Takes a Breath se las ganó apenas empezando. i love how elements as serious as cultural appropriation to the little things like menstruation and masturbation were depicted. Wanting to learn more about herself, about feminism and social justice in a white supremacist culture.Although I did not find anything objectionable in the edition I read, I don't think this excuses the harm done to Indigenous people who gave honest critique and were silenced and never compensated for something that was changed in the final text.

Juliet's ability to just hop on a plane or stay with people she barely knows to avoid conflicts seemed too simple. Juliet is wise—Juliet knows you can feel love and be deeply loved all in one beautiful moment and that letting that moment be huge and awesome and everything—that’s putting love into the world. This is Juliet's specific journey as a lesbian woman of color, and the author makes that very clear. She leaves her family, distance girlfriend, and life behind to assist this woman and learn more about herself. As Juliet sinks deeper into her life, however, she realizes that Harlowe is just like the project she sent Juliet to work on—pieces of paper scattered throughout, words that sound powerful but have lost their meaning or have no substance, disorganized and exploitative. The warm colour palette is so gorgeous and I felt so represented, seeing so many mid size and fat queer people and people of colour - and I know so many other people are going to feel so represented by this too! She goes there to be the Pussy Lady’s intern, a very well loved white feminist lady who wrote Juliet’s favourite book, Raging Flower. Even though it's not a typical fast moving plot, I still felt myself constantly reaching for this because it was endlessly interesting in other ways then plot. The number of queer women around at all times in this novel was impossible to ignore and it made my heart sing.
