2002 Mustang Overview:

2002 Mustangs differed little from the 2001 models. The SN95 body was retained along with the 4.6L SOHC Modular V8 for the GT and the 3.8L Essex V6 for the base Mustang. The most notable change was the complete absence of the SVT Cobra from the Mustang lineup, except for a limited run of 100 cars destined only for Australia. The Cobra would return in 2003 in one of its most heavily-modified, powerful forms. American Mustangs were offered new audio systems with the Shaker 1000 package. The output for the GT"s V8 remained at 260 horsepower with 302ft/lbs of torque and the V6 kept its 193 horsepower and 225ft/lbs of torque. The continuation of both the body and engine designs allowed nearly all of the aftermarket performance parts developed since 1999 to carry over. 2002 Mustang Aftermarket Performance Parts:

Many engine modifications are neither expensive or difficult to install. A combination of bolt-on accessories can instantly add up to 30 horsepower to the 4.6L V8"s total output with decent torque increases. Most enhancements begin with the SN95"s air system with the addition of a cold air intake. Performance cold air systems generally use unique inlet tubing and high-flowing conical filters mounted near or inside the fender well to provide the engine with a high volume of air that"s protected from engine heat for a more efficient charge. The majority of cold air intakes add roughly 10 to 15 horsepower without the need for tuning. Because the stock inlet tubing is already being replaced during the cold air installation, it becomes extremely easy to throw on a new throttle body or throttle-plenum for a gain of another 10 horsepower. Aftermarket throttle bodies have large diameters and more effective valves that optimize airflow into the intake plenum and manifold, thereby creating more power and better throttle response. Ford"s cast iron accessory pulleys use up an unnecessary amount of horsepower, but a set of underdrive pulleys can give the Mustang back up to 10hp of it. Underdrive pulleys are smaller and lighter than the factory pulleys and work by slowing down the speeds of the belt-driven accessories. The slowing effect creates less drag on the belt and the V8 is able to put more power down at the flywheel.

A great first step for a complete exhaust system overhaul is a cat-back kit. Cat-back exhausts use unique muffler designs or full muffler deletes to improve the Mustang"s exhaust tone, while their more efficient mandrel-bent kickover pipes and specialized tips add small amounts of horsepower and torque. Supplementing the cat-back system with an aftermarket performance mid-pipe can make the engine see an extra 10 to 20 horsepower depending on whether the new x-pipe or h-pipe has high-flow catalytic converters or utilizes catalyst deletes. Further power can be found by replacing the stock exhaust manifold with short tube or long tube headers. Short tube ""shorty"" headers are the option easiest to install and simply replace the factory manifold with tubing designed to reduce back pressure and optimize exhaust flow into the stock mid-pipe or other aftermarket mid-pipe with similar length. Long tube headers require a short mid-pipe from the same brand for proper fitment and have a much more extensive installation process. The investment is usually worth the huge 30 horsepower increase in output caused by their extremely low back pressure and amazing exhaust scavenging abilities. 2002 Mustang handling upgrades and brake parts: Horsepower and torque improvements require handling upgrades that can keep high-powered SN95s on the road and make them stop in time to avoid disaster. Brake packages from Wilwood and Baer are powerful enough for high performance track use, making them more than capable of stopping the Mustang"s +3000lb curb weight far better than the stock brakes.
