I just purchased the new ac delco iridium plug to install in my 2003 ltz . I gapped them to 0.043 according to some post i read here. I came across a bulletin that says they come gapped at .040 and not to gap them. I broke one of the tips off and will have to replace that one but other than breaking the tips is it ok to gap these plugs?
I would”nt do itThe electrodes are too thin and break easy. They should be set right from the factory. They do not wear anywhere as fast as copper plugs and will probably outlast your car. BTW if you find some oil in your spark plug towers don”t get too upset as it is normal and won”t really hurt anything. The only way to fix it is to replace the valve cover and it is a pain in the a$$.You have to partially remove the intake manifold. I let my mechanic change the gasket for $60 and I supplied the parts.

I think when i checked them the gap from the factory was about .040, and the 03 manual says it should be .042 , some guys said they gapped them at .043. Is the engine gonna run any different if the gap is slightly less?
plug gap
.040 to .043 should be OK. You can carefully check em with a feeler gauge but definitely don”t use a cheap “ramp style” spark plug gapper because you”ll damage the tip. A couple of thousandths with not affect performance or mileage. Oh and do not wipe the anti-seize compound off the threads.

There suppose to come gapped at .043 i read in a gm bulletin one time if they are gapped differently to discard them. but give or take a couple thousandths shouldn”t hurt anything

I have those same plugs in mine and I never gapped “em, just dropped them in. The only reason you would need to gap them is if they were dropped on the ground or something. It”s so quiet at idle I forget it”s running sometimes.:m2:

this is my second attempt at a response to how to change spark plugs on my 2005 4.2l trailblazer as well as an o2 sensor. i am not familiar with all this treaded discussion stuff, so i apologise if this reaches you in error. may be you can recommend a site that is straightforward and clear. all i need is a instructions and maybe a step by step direction, thanks, dave p

im considering getting the ngk iridium ix plugs and it has a spec gap of .052 according to there manufacter web site. how important is gap anyway in regards to how the engine will perform. the difference in .043 and .052 is only like 1/5 of a millimeter.

Since the gap size has a direct affect on the spark plug”s tip temperatureand on the voltage necessary to ionize (light) the air/fuel mixture, careful attention is required. While it is a popular misconception that plugs are pre-gapped from the factory, the fact remains that the gap must be adjusted for the vehicle that the spark plug is intended for. Those with modified engines must remember that a modified engine with higher compression or forced induction will typically require a smaller gap settings (to ensure ignitabilityin these denser air/fuel mixtures). As a rule, the more power you are making, the smaller the gap you will need.A spark plug”s voltage requirement is directly proportionate to the gap size. The larger the gap, the more voltage is needed to bridge the gap. Most experienced tuners know that opening gaps up to present a larger spark to the air/fuel mixture maximizes burn efficiency. It is for this reason that most racers add high power ignition systems. The added power allows them to open the gap yet still provide a strong spark. With this mind, many think the larger the gap the better. In fact, some aftermarket ignition systems boast that their systems can tolerate gaps that are extreme. Be wary of such claims. In most cases, the largest gap you can run may still be smaller than you think.
